What is a pocket pet?

As the name suggests, a pocket pet is a term used to refer to small, pocket-sized animals. This includes animals such as:

  • Guinea pigs
  • Hamsters
  • Hedgehogs
  • Mice or Rats
  • Gerbils
  • Chinchillas

How do I know if my pocket pet needs medical care?

A general rule we recommend is bringing in your pet for a full veterinary exam once a year. That way we can monitor their health and diagnose any underlying conditions during their regular checkups. Due to their size, it may be difficult to notice any signs of discomfort or pain. If you notice any changes in your pet’s health or behaviour bring them in to see one of our veterinarians. Signs that your pet may need medical care include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Appears quieter than normal
  • Discharge from their eyes or nose
  • Lumps or sores
