How do I know if my pet has arthritis?

Some pets are better at hiding their pain than others. This can make it hard to notice any signs of arthritis. You may notice your pet is reluctant to do certain tasks that cause them more discomfort such as going up and down the stairs. The best way to know is to bring them in for a visit to see one of our veterinarians. Some common signs to look for include:

• Stiff or swollen joints
• Wincing when touched
• Walking awkwardly or limping
• Difficulty jumping up or down
• Increased aggression towards people or other pets

How does arthritis affect my pet?

As your pet enters their golden years, the cartilage between their bones may start to wear down. This usually causes pain and inflammation as their bones rub together. This is when you may start to notice a change in your pet’s behaviour and ability to go on with their day-to-day activities. To help manage your pet’s pain, our team will create a pain management plan tailored to their needs and lifestyle. We may prescribe medication, rehabilitation, or exercises. A great way to help manage their pain at home is by making their water and food bowls more accessible by building a ramp or keeping them close by.
