Is it safe to microchip my pet?

Microchipping is a safe, permanent way to identify your pet in case they get lost. A microchip is a tiny device about the size and shape of a grain of rice. The microchip is placed just under the loose skin at the back of your pet’s neck through a small injection. When a lost dog or cat without an ID tag is found, a veterinarian can use a microchip scanner to check for a chip. Once scanned, they can retrieve the pet’s medical information and owner’s contact information. This is why it is essential to keep your contact information up to date, so you can easily be contacted and reunited with your pet.

Is a microchip better than a collar or ID tag?

We recommend using a microchip, a collar, and ID tag to identify your pet. An ID tag is still a reliable identification method. Pets that have tags with current contact information are more likely to not end up in shelters and tend to get home faster than those without tags. However, collars and ID tags aren’t permanent. They can be removed or become detached. With a microchip, your pet will have a better chance of being identified and returned to you. Although we hope your pet never becomes lost, we want you to be prepared.
